After seeing an article in the magazine that stupidly asks "Where is Slovenia?," she decides to write a letter to the press justifying her suicide, the idea being to make the press believe that she has killed herself because people don't even know where Slovenia is in today's global village. Good excuse, she thinks. Her plan fails and she wakes up in Villete (a mental hospital in Slovenia), where she is told she has a week to live.

Her presence there affects all of the mental hospital's patients, especially Zedka (who has clinical depression), Mari (who suffers from panic attacks), and Eduard (who has schizophrenia) and with whom Veronika falls in love.

During her internment in Villete she realises that she has nothing to lose and can therefore do what she wants, say what she wants and be who she wants without having to worry about what others think of her. (Who's going to criticise her? She's mad, after all.)

Because of this newfound freedom Veronika experiences all the things she never allowed herself to experience including hatred, love and even sexual awakening.

Another character that has an interesting part is Dr. Igor, one of Vilette's top doctors. Igor has a theory about a poison of the mind, which he names vitriol after the toxic chemical discovered by alchemists. The reader quickly discovers that Dr. Igor believes that by telling patients they only have a very short time period to live, they will find the will to live again and will appreciate being alive rather than trying to commit suicide again.

As a dystopia, it was preceded by Russian author Yevgeny Zamyatin's 1921 novel We, which Orwell was familiar with, having read it in French and reviewed it in 1946; it became a significant influence on Nineteen Eighty-Four. Orwell also obsessively re-read Katharine Burdekin's 1937 dystopia, Swastika Night, borrowing from it the theme of a future fascist State where all "true" past history has been erased except for isolated fragments kept in secret, forbidden books.

Plot:
Winston Smith, a member of the Outer Party, lives in the ruins of London, the chief city of Airstrip One — a front-line province of the totalitarian superstate Oceania. He grew up in post-World War II United Kingdom, during the revolution and civil war. When his parents disappeared during the civil war, he was picked up by the growing Ingsoc (Newspeak for "English Socialism") movement, placed into an orphanage and eventually given a job in the Outer Party.

Winston lives a squalid existence in a one-room apartment in "Victory Mansions", and eats black bread, synthetic meals served at his workplace, and drinks industrial-grade "Victory Gin." He is discontented with his life, and keeps a journal of his negative thoughts and opinions about the Party. This journal, along with any other eccentric behaviour, if found, would result in his torture and death through the dealings of the Thought Police (he starkly explains the very definite result of his "thoughtcrime" in a journal entrance: "Thoughtcrime does not entail death. Thoughtcrime IS death"). The Thought Police have telescreens in every Party household and public area, as well as hidden microphones and informers in order to catch potential thoughtcriminals who could endanger the sanctity of the Party. Children are carefully indoctrinated from birth to report any suspected thought criminal, even − especially − their parents.

The Ministry of Truth, which exercises complete control over all mass media in Oceania, employs Winston at the Records Department, where he doctors historical records in order to comply with the Party's version of the past. Since the events of the present constantly shape the perception of the past, the task is a never-ending one.

While Winston likes his work, especially the intellectual challenge involved in fabricating a complete historical anecdote from scratch, he is also fascinated by the real past, and eagerly tries to find out more about the forbidden truth. At the Ministry of Truth, he encounters Julia, a mechanic on the novel-writing machines, and the two begin a necessarily clandestine relationship, regularly meeting up in the countryside (away from surveillance) or in a room above an antique shop in the Proles' area of the city. The owner of the shop exchanges various facts on the mysterious pre-revolutionary past with Winston and sells him artifacts from this period, as well as renting the room to them. Julia and Winston find their new hiding place a paradise, as they believe that there is no telescreen and so they believe themselves completely alone and safe.

As their relationship progresses, Winston's views begin to change, and he finds himself relentlessly questioning Ingsoc. Unknown to the two (or to the reader), he and Julia are under surveillance by the Thought Police. When he is approached by Inner Party member O'Brien, Winston believes that he has made contact with the Resistance or Brotherhood which is opposed to the ideals of the Party. O'Brien gives Winston a copy of "the book", a searing criticism of Ingsoc believed to have been written by the dissident Emmanuel Goldstein, leader of the Brotherhood.

Winston and Julia are eventually apprehended by the Thought Police in their supposed sanctuary, which actually contains a hidden telescreen, and are then interrogated separately in the Ministry of Love, where opponents of the regime are tortured and usually executed but sometimes released. O'Brien appears at the Ministry of Love, and reveals that he will help Winston "be cured" of his hatred for the Party, by subjecting Winston to numerous torture sessions. During one of these sessions, he explains to Winston the nature of the perpetual war, and that the purpose of the torture is not to extract a fake confession, but to alter the way Winston thinks. O'Brien also assures Winston that once he is cured, meaning that he accepts reality as described by the Party, he will be executed.

The party intends to achieve this with a combination of torture and electroshocks, continuing until O'Brien decides that Winston is "cured". Eventually, Winston is sent into Room 101, the most feared room in the Ministry of Love, where a person's greatest fear is forced upon them as the final step in their "re-education." Since Winston is morbidly afraid of rats, a cage of the hungry vermin is placed over his eyes, so that when the door is opened, they will eat their way through his skull. In terror, as the cage is placed onto his head, he screams, "Do it to Julia!", breaking his vow to never betray her, in order to stop the torture.

Near the end, Winston and Julia again meet in a park, by chance. They remember, with distaste, the "bad" feelings they once shared. Both acknowledge having betrayed the other, and find themselves apathetic. We finally see that the torture and "reprogramming" have been successful; Winston loves Big Brother.

It deals with the lives of the three friends whose elation on making it to one of the best engineering colleges in India is quickly deflated by the rigor and monotony of academic work. Most of the book deals with the numerous attempts by the trio to cope with and/or beat the system as well as Hari's fling with Neha who just happens to be the daughter of Prof. Cherian, the sadistic head of the Mechanical Engineering Department.

While the tone of the novel is humorous, it takes some dark turns every now and then, especially when it comes to the families of the main characters. Most of the action, however, takes place inside the campus as the boys, led by the ever creative Ryan, frequently lament how the internationally lauded IIT system has stifled their creativity by forcing them to value grades more than anything else. Uninspiring teaching and numerous assignments adds to their woes although the boys do find a sympathizer in Prof. Veera, the new fluid mechanics professor.

The Alchemist is an enlightening story about a shepherd's quest to "find his treasure". Along the way, he encounters helpful guides as well as seemingly insurmountable obstacles. As he nears the end of his journey, he finds, in an ironic twist, that it isn't what or where he thought is was. This is recommended reaing for all the seekers of the world.

Calvin and Hobbes was a daily comic strip written and illustrated by Bill Watterson, following the humorous antics of Calvin, an imaginative six-year old boy and Hobbes, his energetic and sardonic—albeit stuffed—tiger. The strip was syndicated from November 18, 1985 to December 31, 1995. At its height, Calvin and Hobbes was carried by over 2,400 newspapers worldwide. To date, more than 30 million copies of the 18 Calvin and Hobbes books have been printed, and popular culture is still replete with references to the strip.

The strip is vaguely set in the contemporary Midwestern United States, on the outskirts of suburbia, a location probably inspired by Watterson's home town of Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Calvin and Hobbes appear in most of the strips, though several focused instead upon Calvin's family. The broad themes of the strip deal with Calvin's flights of fantasy, his friendship with Hobbes, his misadventures, his views on a diverse range of political and cultural issues and his relationships and interactions with his parents, classmates, educators, and other members of society. However, the strip's immense popularity has led to the appearance of various "bootleg" items, including T-shirts, keychains, bumper stickers, and window decals, often including obscene language or references wholly uncharacteristic of the whimsical spirit of Watterson's work.

Love Story... Book review.

Eric Segal’s ‘Love Story’ is indisputably one of the best love stories ever written. Therefore, it might come as a surprise to many to learn that he had originally written the story for a movie of the same name starring Ryan O’Neal and Allie McGraw, which was released back in 1970. It was only in 1988, 18 years after the runaway success of the movie did the author publish it into a bestselling novel.

“Love means never having to say you are sorry.” This is the one most touching line in the book and forms sort of the backbone of the whole story. The protagonists are Oliver Barrett IV, a preppie Ivy League lawyer and Jennifer Cavilleri a seemingly nerdish, ebullient music major. Both are from as different worlds as possible. But you know what they say about love breaking all barriers. So does the love in this tragic story.

It is the quintessential love-story-line where, ‘Rich boy’, Oliver meets and falls for ‘Poor girl’, Jenny and they get married amidst opposition from his parents. Their whole saga is an apparent love hate one, at least that’s what’s evident from the language they use, but it’s all on the surface. The story moves at a rapid pace yet covers a period of only a few short years. It is a story of selfless love and loss, of sacrifice and poignant anguish. By the end, there are quite a few moments liable to bring on the water works.

It is a wonderful heartfelt tumultuous story, which everyone in love should read. And yes, it is true…Love, does mean never having to say you are sorry.

'Animal Farm' Book review....

Read it three years back and was struck by the story of how power corrupts, even when it originates out of a beautiful revolution (the case of Cuba is a perfect example… a glorious revolution to free the people of tyranny turns tyranical when Fidel becomes poisoned by his own power).

I also appreciated the fact that Orwell was a socialist. I knew his book was very anti-Stalinist but I had a hunch that Orwell himself was still very much a Socialist, and I was glad to find out that my hunch was correct. I guess this is significant to me, because a Socialistic criticism of Stalinistic totalitarianism is far more likely to be accurate and helpful than one authored by a capitalist.

Finally I was struck by the simple and forthright style of Orwell’s writing. I also enjoyed (well enjoyed might not be quite the right word) 1984, but Animal Farm to me is on a whole other level of quality. It reminds me of the Bible in that regard, even a kid can understand the story, but a learned professor could spend years delving in deeper.

As for a modern-day application, Soviet-style governance is not exactly hip today (except in North Korea), but the widespread use of propagnda and absolute double-speak and lies is still the rule of the day. The USA is not on the level of Stalin’s Soviet Union, but we are rapidly moving in that direction, and that is why truth is needed now more than ever.

But I also would argue that we need vision. In Animal Farm (spoiler ahead), the vision of an egalitarian society of animals articulated by Old Major was a beautiful one, and good one, and the failure of the Animal Farm to live up to those beautiful ideals does not negate the truth and goodness of those ideas. In the same way, I do think we should continue to speak against greed and capitalism in our era, even if the alternative is difficult to achieve. Sharing is tough but it is possible. I really don’t read Orwell as saying that the answer is to give up Socialism but rather to escew the power dynamics of bosses.

Catch 22..... Book review....

Joseph Heller's Catch-22 requires a certain mood from the reader. It requires the reader to be open to cynicism, to absurdity, to satire of the most biting variety. Catch-22 requires the reader to laugh at that which is held most sacred.

Fortunately, Heller is able to invoke that mood and convince his readers to suspend disbelief until each pixel is in place and the ending leaves the readers--for at least a moment--convinced that all was exactly as Heller wrote it.

For those of us born post-Vietnam, it can be hard to remember that Heller was writing about the "good war." Yet, it hardly matters what war he's writing about, or even that any war is his setting. He could have told his story with a Southern sewing circle or a science fiction convention. But the setting he chooses makes it accessible to everyone. It also prepares the reader to experience horror. After all, we expect to be horrified at some point in a novel about war. We just don't expect to be horrified at quite what Heller has to reveal to us.

One of my favorite aspects of Catch-22 is the way Heller treats time. This is not a simple chronology of a man's war experiences. Instead, time rotates and with each rotation we come a little closer to the "truth," though we are threatened many times with an eclipse. As satire it is a masterpiece. For pure absurdity and dark comedy, it has no equals. Ultimately, it is a wonderful book because it paints our society in a way that we might otherwise deny and cheerfully forces questions on us that are worth asking.
